Three Cannabinoids, Three Different Jobs

If you've been browsing our gummy collection and wondering what the difference is between CBD, CBG, and CBN — you're not alone. These three cannabinoids all come from the same plant, they're all non-intoxicating, and they all interact with your endocannabinoid system. But they do very different things.

The short version:

  • CBD — The foundation. Well-researched, versatile, broadly supportive.
  • CBG — The daytime one. Focus, stress relief, anxiety support without sedation.
  • CBN — The nighttime one. Sleep support, relaxation, wind-down.

Here's the full breakdown — what each one is, what the research says, and how to choose.

CBD — The Most Researched Cannabinoid

What it is: Cannabidiol (CBD) is the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid in hemp. It's been studied more extensively than any other cannabinoid and is the only one with FDA-approved medications (Epidiolex, for seizure disorders).

How it works: CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, which regulates functions like mood, sleep, and immune response. Unlike some cannabinoids, CBD doesn't bind directly to cannabinoid receptors — instead, it influences them indirectly, leading to its range of potential effects. (Neurogan Health)

What the research supports:

  • Anxiety and stress relief
  • Inflammation and pain support
  • Sleep support (mild)
  • Seizure management (FDA-approved in pharmaceutical form)

Best for: Daily wellness support, general stress and anxiety relief, inflammation, and as a foundation for any cannabinoid regimen. CBD is the most versatile of the three — it does a little of everything without specializing in any one area.

Time of day: Anytime. CBD is non-sedating at typical doses and works well morning or night.

CBG — The "Mother Cannabinoid" With Impressive New Research

What it is: Cannabigerol (CBG) is often called the "mother of all cannabinoids" because it's the precursor molecule from which THC, CBD, and other cannabinoids are synthesized in the plant. CBG is most associated with its use for focus and is gaining significant scientific interest. (Neurogan Health)

How it works: CBG binds to both CB1 and CB2 receptors as a partial agonist, plus it interacts with alpha-2 adrenergic receptors. This broader receptor profile may account for the clear-headed focus users describe. (PubMed Central)

What the research supports:

In 2024, Washington State University published the first human clinical trial on CBG — and the results were notable. In the double-blind, placebo-controlled study, 20mg of hemp-derived CBG significantly reduced feelings of anxiety at 20, 45, and 60 minutes after ingestion compared to placebo. Stress ratings also decreased. Critically, CBG also enhanced verbal memory performance — with no evidence of intoxication, cognitive slowing, or motor impairment. (Washington State University)

Survey data from the same research team indicated that 51% of CBG users consume it to decrease anxiety, with 78% asserting its superiority over conventional anxiety medications. (Scientific Reports / Nature)

Best for: Daytime use — stress and anxiety relief without sedation, mental clarity, focus. The key differentiator from CBD is that CBG appears to have a more targeted anxiolytic effect, and from CBN is that it doesn't make you sleepy.

Time of day: Morning to afternoon. Not ideal right before bed.

CBN — The Sleep Cannabinoid

What it is: Cannabinol (CBN) forms naturally as THC ages and oxidizes. It's a minor cannabinoid found in small concentrations in cannabis, and it's been gaining significant attention for its potential role in sleep support.

How it works: CBN interacts with CB1 and CB2 receptors, though with much lower potency than THC. It's mildly psychoactive at very high doses, but at typical hemp product doses it's effectively non-intoxicating.

What the research supports: A study published in PubMed found that CBN affects sleep using objective measures, with the magnitude of the effect on NREM sleep comparable to the sleep aid zolpidem. Unlike zolpidem, CBN also positively influenced REM sleep. (PubMed, University of Sydney)

Early research also found that participants felt drowsier when CBN was combined with THC than when either was taken alone — consistent with the entourage effect, and exactly why our Unwind Trio formulas combine CBN with other cannabinoids rather than using it in isolation. (Sleep Foundation)

Best for: Evening wind-down and sleep support. CBN is the most specialized of the three — it does one thing particularly well.

Time of day: Evening and nighttime only.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between CBD, CBG, and CBN?
CBD is the most researched cannabinoid and supports general wellness, stress, and inflammation. CBG is the daytime cannabinoid — research shows it reduces anxiety and stress without sedation. CBN is the sleep cannabinoid — early research shows it supports NREM and REM sleep, especially when combined with other cannabinoids.

Which cannabinoid is best for anxiety?
CBG has the most targeted anxiety research. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial from Washington State University found 20mg of CBG significantly reduced anxiety and stress compared to placebo — without intoxication or cognitive impairment. CBD also has well-established anxiety support and is a good foundation.

Which cannabinoid is best for sleep?
CBN, especially in combination with CBD. Research published in PubMed showed CBN's effect on NREM sleep was comparable to zolpidem, and it also positively influenced REM sleep.

Are these cannabinoids psychoactive?
CBD is completely non-psychoactive. CBG is non-psychoactive. CBN is mildly psychoactive only at very high doses — at typical hemp product doses, it's effectively non-intoxicating.

Will CBD, CBG, or CBN show up on a drug test?
Not if the products are THC-free, which both our Balance Boost and Unwind Trio THC Free products are. Standard drug tests screen for THC metabolites, not CBD, CBG, or CBN.

Can I take CBD, CBG, and CBN together?
Yes — this is actually the point. The entourage effect suggests cannabinoids work better together than in isolation. Our Unwind Trio is built on exactly this principle.
