What Is CBD and Will It Get You High? The Honest Answer

By Greenhouse Girls | Palm Harbor & Oldsmar, FL

The Short Answer: No. Here’s Why.

CBD — cannabidiol — is a naturally occurring compound found in the cannabis plant. It does not produce a psychoactive high. It will not make you feel stoned, impaired, or intoxicated. You can take CBD and drive, work, and carry on with your day completely normally.

That’s the short answer. Here’s the longer one — because understanding why CBD doesn’t get you high tells you a lot about what it actually does.

Why THC Gets You High and CBD Doesn’t

Both THC and CBD are cannabinoids — compounds produced by the cannabis plant. But they interact with your body in completely different ways.

THC binds directly and powerfully to CB1 receptors in your brain — the receptors responsible for psychoactive effects. When THC locks onto those receptors, it triggers the cascade of effects we associate with getting high: euphoria, altered perception, increased appetite, and so on.

CBD doesn’t bind to CB1 receptors the same way. Instead, it works indirectly through your endocannabinoid system — a network of receptors and chemical signals that plays a role in regulating mood, sleep, immune response, and more. (WebMD, medically reviewed 2026) CBD also appears to modulate how THC binds to receptors, which is why products with both CBD and THC tend to produce a smoother, less anxiety-prone experience than THC alone.

What CBD May Actually Do

CBD is not a miracle cure and we won’t pretend otherwise. But it’s also not just a placebo. The research on CBD is substantial and growing. Here’s what the current evidence supports — keeping in mind that results vary by person and we’re not making medical claims:

Anxiety and stress — CBD has been studied for its anxiolytic (anti-anxiety) properties. Research published in the National Library of Medicine suggests it may interact with serotonin receptors in ways that could modulate stress response. (PMC/National Library of Medicine)

Inflammation — CBD has demonstrated anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties in multiple peer-reviewed studies. (NIH/PMC) This is one of the more consistent findings in the literature.

Sleep — CBD is often included in sleep formulas. Its calming effects may help with the anxiety component of sleep difficulty, per current research.

Epilepsy — The strongest clinical evidence for CBD is in seizure reduction. The FDA-approved drug Epidiolex is a CBD-based pharmaceutical used to treat certain forms of epilepsy — this is the most established medical application of CBD to date.

What CBD is not: a substitute for medical care, a guaranteed treatment for any condition, or a one-size-fits-all solution. If you’re considering CBD for a specific health concern, consult your doctor.

Is CBD Legal?

Yes. Hemp-derived CBD with less than 0.3% Delta-9 THC is federally legal under the 2018 Farm Bill for adults. No medical card required. Our CBD products are hemp-derived, third-party lab tested, and COA-verified.

Will CBD Show Up on a Drug Test?

This depends on the product. Pure CBD isolate products should not trigger a positive drug test for THC. However, many CBD products are full-spectrum, meaning they contain trace amounts of THC alongside the CBD. Those trace amounts can accumulate with regular use and potentially trigger a positive test.

If you’re subject to drug testing, look specifically for CBD isolate products and check the COA to confirm no detectable THC. When in doubt, avoid all cannabis products.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will CBD get me high?
No. CBD does not bind to CB1 receptors the way THC does and does not produce a psychoactive high.

What does CBD feel like?
Most people describe CBD as calming without being sedating — a reduction in tension or anxiety without impairment. Some feel nothing at lower doses. Effects vary significantly by person.

Can I take CBD every day?
Many people do. CBD has a well-established safety profile in research. As with any supplement, consult your doctor if you take prescription medications, as CBD can interact with certain drugs.

Is CBD the same as hemp oil?
No. Hemp oil (or hemp seed oil) is pressed from hemp seeds and contains no CBD. It’s a food product. CBD oil comes from the flowers and leaves of the plant and contains cannabidiol.

How long does CBD take to work?
CBD tinctures taken under the tongue absorb in 15–45 minutes. CBD gummies take 30–90 minutes. Topicals work locally and relatively quickly. Effects are often subtle and may build with consistent use.
